Alignment preferences?

Post  mghalpin on Sun Mar 28, 2010 5:49 am

Getting new tires before the 4/10 event and I saw this alignment suggestion on miata.net

<blockquote>
Front

Caster: Maximum
Camber: -1.5
Toe out 1/16" per
side

Rear

Caster not applicable, there is no adjustment
possible

Camber: -2
Toe in 1/16" per side

Any thoughts or preferences to share?

A few questions first:

What year is the car?
What modifications have you made to it?
Is it for racing only or do you drive it on the street too?

You won't get anywhere near those numbers. Those alignment numbers can only be achieved by a lowered/modified car. If you do get -1.5 camber up front you have a "special" car

Max front camber then max caster. Sacrifice caster for camber. Don't expect to get more than -1 degrees in the front for camber.
Zero toe or a little toe in (1/32" per side). Toe out will eat your tires real fast.

For the back run 0.5 degrees more negative camber in the rear than what you achieved in the front. Example- If you get -1 up front run -1.5 in the back. Toe in 1/16" per side.

Thanks for the advice! The tires arrived yesterday and go on tomorrow. I'll dial in this alignment and report back later on the results.

See you at Devens!

Bill, we need to talk about camber Smile

Actually, I used to run more on the back than front. That thinking has changed as of a couple years ago. And with good results.

Stock car Vs. a CSP car with stiffer than OEM springs and lower ride height will call for drastically different alignment settings.

Just wait until you experience a proper stock class auto-x car Mike Stock cars require some voodoo to make them handle right

Be sure you're sitting in the car when aligned. At least have your weight in the drivers seat.

A much better solution is to bring the car to Apex Automotive in Marlborough.

Les knows his stuff with his eyes closed while fast asleep at 3 o'clock in the morning.
And, he's a member! Very Happy
